Creative people always find a way to shape up their imagination. This does not always require a formal training, rather the aspiration to learn and prepare on major goals like fulfilling one’s passion. A live example of the above lines is the well known young art portrait artist Mr.Jugal Sarkar.
Early days in North Bengal
Jugal Sarkar, a self-taught artist has his residential house nestled in Balurghat, in the Northern part of Bengal. Now a philosophy honours graduate from Rabindra Bharati University failed to get a chance to study fine arts in his early days. This irony however couldn’t restrict the young artist from becoming a renowned painter of present times. He realised that in his hometown, he had to struggle immensely to pursue a career in painting. So, he came to kolkata to turn his passion for painting into a full time profession. However, during the early days in the City of Joy, he started taking drawing classes to earn his own livelihood.
His love for painting started from his early childhood days when he saw his uncle’s notebook. The notebook consisted of his uncle’s drawings. Since then, he got attracted towards drawing and painting. But, his professional painting career started from the year 2018. It all started with drawing tuitions. During the time he slowly moved towards commercial works which included cover pages of books. According to Jugal, practice and consistency play the main role in success. Unlike portrait photographers, art portrait making is one of the difficult task.
Portrait Artist and presence in social media
According to his fan followers on social media, he excels in his previous works everyday. Each portrait is lively and amazing. He is equally skilled in both color painting and pencil sketches. He uses oil, water and acrylic mediums for painting. However, his pencil sketches using graphite pencils as well as charcoal excel in their own way.
What does to portrait mean?
During the Covid pandemic, when schools and colleges started online classes, Jugal took tutoring to an all new level of success, where he started online painting classes. Apart from taking regular classes, he is also engaged in monthly workshops. Each workshop is different from the other in terms of medium, language and the context.
Social media these days plays a huge role as an advertising medium and promotion. However, it has its limitations also. This eminent young artist shares his works in some of the leading social media platforms on a regular basis. Some miscreants use the images of the artist without his permission in his or her name or post in other’s names. This is a punishable offence and necessary measures should be taken. However, there is one good thing about this. It signifies that the artworks by the artist are worthy and have some magic that art lovers can only appreciate. People who are crazy for names and fame without their own creativity will take illegal routes to do the same. Follow Jugal Sarkar in Facebook.
Accuracy in portrait painting
Once asked how to specialise in portrait painting and to paint a portrait accurately, he sharply replied – “At first draw, sketch or paint a minimum of 100 portraits and maximum unlimited….”. This shows how much dedication one needs to be a great painter. Very recently, he posted some of his favourite portrait paintings. The post had a title “ 100 favourite works in 2021”
In the same post there was information from the artist that says he has painted or sketched almost 500 portraits in this year. Its an amazing achievement. There are different stories behind each painting or sketch that are portrayed, and some of them are very interesting. One such story is with this image –
Portrait of Pankaj Tripathi
Another recent incident happened where, while Jugal paint portrait of Actor Pankaj Tripathi who invited the young artist at Hotel Oberoi Grand to meet him personally. He took a selfie with the artist along with his painting and the news was published in a leading English newspaper. These are appreciations that motivate every artist to move forward in his artistic journey. The post from Jugal Sarkar was published on a social media platform on 5th December 2021 at 19:52
“Today’s Evening With the most Powerful Actor Pankaj Tripathi Sir at Hotel Oberoi Grand,,,”
There are several such incidents with actors like Sabyasachi Chakraborty, Vicky Kaushal, late Soumitra Chattopadhyay, etc. where the artist received appreciation for his artworks.

Working in Sukumar Roy calendar project
His magic with brushes, colors and pencils on canvas and papers will continue to amaze art lovers and his fan followers. In his recent artworks in commercial form, paintings for the Sukumar Ray Club calendar 2022 are worth mentioning. Earlier he had also worked for the Sukumar Ray Club yearly calendar 2021. Each of these works is a milestone that the artist is touching every time with his artworks. For his artworks, he has earned a lot of praise and some awards.
According to the artist, success is when people become happy to see their portraits or after buying a portrait from the artist’s collection is what success is to him. Yes, spreading happiness through his paintings and excelling every time is a great success for sure. Wish this young artist a great journey ahead with his fantabulous touch of brush, colors and pencils. Portrait artists are one such rare breeds who always value client satisfaction rather than displaying their art in national portrait gallery.
