Eight years in content creation have shaped me, but as a research artist in Durga Puja themes, I find my soul in writing—an art that transcends.

A celebration of the ordinary that has become a remarkable milestone, the Mobile Photography Exhibition 2025 organized by COG India Art Foundation is all about. The inaugural edition of the exhibition has spurred an interest in mobile photography, that was being waived off from the mindset of the people.

But here, among the glowing prints and eager faces, one truth is undeniable—mobile photography is the art of now.

Why Mobile Photography Deserves Its Exhibition

Mobile phones have become our visual diaries. They reside in our pockets, ready to capture anything from the intimacy of teatime laughing to the majesty of sunsets, unlike professional cameras. The creativity is democratized rather than diminished by its prevalence. This silent revolution which turned multiple unique photos into an experience worthy of a gallery, is being recognized by the Mobile Photography Exhibition 2025.

“It feels so lively,” says Kuheli, one of the guests of a participant. “You’re not just seeing photographs; you’re feeling them through the reactions of others.” “I’ve never thought of myself as a photographer,” says one of the participants, a college student. “But seeing my work printed and got a space on the wall here… it’s like my world expanded overnight.”

A Mood of Celebration

The exhibition is not being caged only within COG India Art Foundation; it’s a festival of perspectives. Housed in an expansive space filled with the proper light and buzzing energy, it feels less like a formal display, and more like a celebration of multiple connections among the humans. Saikat Mondal, being the curator of this Mobile photography Exhibition chose individual photographs that tell stories—of resilience, of fleeting beauty, of humor in the mundane. Walking through the exhibition is like flipping through the collective memory of a global community. The curation adds to the charm, with thematic clusters that allow viewers to experience a narrative as they move from one frame to another.

Printing a series of photographs from your phone, moments from a single day or a cherished memory, and displaying them on your walls, creates an eternal time capsule, a window into a fleeting moment that stays alive forever. Mobile photography isn’t just art—it’s the most personal and intimate form of storytelling, and printing brings those stories to life.

Why Print and Exhibit in a Digital Age?

In an age of infinite scrolling, why does printing a photograph matter? The answer lies in the weight of tangibility. When a photograph is printed, it demands attention. It stops being a flickering moment on a screen and transforms into something deliberate, something permanent.

“Seeing my photo from my last trek on the wall is one thing,” says Shamik Ghosh, professor of Jadavpur University, Department of Mathematics, whose monochrome, photo of a bird flying with a backdrop of a snow-clad mountain. “But seeing it printed… it’s like it breathes differently. It has a life of its own now.”

The transition from pixels to print also emphasizes how expertly each image is created. A far more immersive experience is made by the textures of the image, the paper selection, and even the lighting in the exhibition area. It is known as a work of art that is meant to be felt rather than only seen; it is more than a mere picture. The emotional impact of having a fragment of memories in your hands should also not be overlooked. Visitors who are looking at an image that is too personal have been seen wiping away their tears.

While inaugurating, our guest, Debarshi Duttagupta, also expressed his excitement for this very first Mobile Photography exhibition. According to him, “wall-hung photographs clicked by the self can enhance and motivate a person’s mood while seeing those.”

Participants as the Heart of the Event

The way the Mobile Photography Exhibition 2025 concentrates its participants is what makes it so magical. They are also being honored as artists here, not simply participants. Through customized nameplates next to each photo, shout-outs during the opening ceremony, or thorough jury criticism, the curators have made every effort to ensure each participant feels appreciated. Not only this, every participant received a tailored medal, and certificates with their names engraved, but also for showcasing the potential of the participants.

This exhibition served as a springboard for many, the initial recognition of their artistic abilities. A multiple number of participants also mentioned that receiving this distinction had rekindled their enthusiasm and motivated them to take photography more seriously.

The Participants Take Away

This Mobile Photography Exhibition 2025 not only provided the visitors and the participants with several memories but also gave them tools for future-ready. On receiving a certificate of participation, each participant feels like they belong to the greater creative community.

Some of the more seasoned participants are making use of the occasion for networking with the other photographers, and even possible partners. It serves as confirmation to newcomers that their viewpoint counts.

Voices of the Audience

If participants feel fulfilled, the audience feels enchanted. Many visitors expressed surprise at the depth of the talent of the artist displayed. “We have always thought mobile photography is just for selfies and clicking the pictures of food,” says one guest of the participant, shaking her head.

“But this… this is something extraordinary completely.”

Others focused on how relatable the photographs were. Unlike high-fashion photography or conceptual art, these images felt accessible.

“While walking down the streets of Kumartuli, I just captured the face of the Durga, with a feeling that puja is approaching. The face of the Durga, was also very lively and I was not carrying my camera, so I captured that moment on my Samsung mobile”, says Arusharko.

Mobile photography holds a unique charm—it’s intimate, immediate, and deeply personal. Unlike traditional cameras, our phones are always with us, capturing moments as they unfold. Collecting a printed mobile photograph is like preserving a piece of your memory, an intimate fragment of time that feels alive. It’s not just art; it’s a tangible connection to the stories that shape our lives.

Looking Ahead

The Mobile Photography Exhibition 2025 is considered to be a movement rather than just an occasion. It demonstrates and focuses that creativity doesn’t require a high-end camera and the art doesn’t have to be exclusive. The show honors the art of daily life and the artists who are concealed among us by promoting mobile photography.

There is already a discussion regarding the next phase edition as the event draws to a conclusion. Aspiring participants are promising to record ever more captivating stories, and new themes are being proposed. Long after the final picture has been removed, the inspiration that the show has sown will keep growing.

This exhibition serves as a reminder to stop, observe, and rejoice in a world when moments are too short. The remarkable may occasionally be found in plain sight, just waiting to be caught—not by a sophisticated lens, but by the person holding the phone.
