The exhibition was inaugurated by eminent sculptor Sri Tarak Garai, eminent painter and art critic Sri Ashit Paul on 18 January 2023.  The exhibition was attended by art enthusiasts, critics and collectors, who shared their appreciation for Sanjoy’s work. The artist himself gave a brief introduction to his exhibition, which left all in attendance mesmerized.

Sanjoy’s art is a heart-rending ode to the dire times of the Covid lockdown period. Each painting captures a solemn reality that cannot be hidden or ignored and, like a song in watercolor, Sanjoy’s art speaks directly to its viewers. Color, which is usually one of the major aspects of his art, takes a backseat as Sanjoy shows his mastery of Chiaroscuro with only black tubes at his disposal. His searing works evoke anguish, sorrow and loss – emotions he no doubt shared in the midst of the pandemic when he and his family experienced tragedy during this difficult time. Such an emotional and powerful technique was the perfect vessel for Sanjoy to express the pain and sorrow he has experienced during this difficult time, having suffered the loss of so many dear loved ones around him. The grace and beauty in these mourning pieces is truly inspiring, showing how art can help us to express our grief but also to ultimately bring hope and light in even the darkest times.

By his hands, this broad pattern has been expressed in various ways, every time it seems like a melancholic  poetry, sometimes it seems like the fluttering cheerfulness of the pattern after seeing the previous picture.   The reflection of the light and darkness in these paintings was a metaphor for Sanjoy’s inner state during the time of grief. He wanted to express his feelings in this series and he succeeded. Through his love of painting, Sanjoy has managed to capture the emotional complexities he experienced during some of India’s darkest days. His Chiaroscuro creations offer a unique glimpse into one man’s personal struggles with life and loss – yet also provide hope in difficult times. By pouring out all these feelings onto canvas, Sanjoy is graciously providing us an opportunity to join him on this journey if we choose so.

In one wall, there is a cluster of ten paintings,  each of them telling stories about the vast and metamorphic landscape of the Chotonagpur plateau.  These stories are not just about the landscape, but also about human emotions and struggles. In each painting there is a representation of hope amidst chaos, an inspiration for finding a way out of darkness.
