Introduction

April burst onto the city with an explosion of heat and hunger. The rains were quelled, the songs were parched, for there seemed to be no respite. And then, from the sixth of April there sprung a little turn unto 16 Lake Temple Road, Kolkata; and within it a world of soft, soothing riverine breeze. The Chhobi-O-Ghor gallery had emerged a home of the Jamdani saree, a sanctuary of histories embellished on loom.

The entrance seemed to come with a declaration: that this exhibit would lead you into the lives of a People who weave their very land into their craft.

The Timeless Craft of Jamdani

As one walks past one room to the other, we are told of how the Jamdani is born from familial harmony and generational knowledge. Envisioned in the artistic mind and executed over a period of one to six months, each saree is not only a unique work of art but also a labor of love defiant of industrial callings. The Jamdani cannot become a mass-produced commodity. It needs the water, the wind and the soil; the touch of soft fingers to come alive.

Living Threads of Tradition:

The fluidity of the Sitalakhya is carried onto the fall of the saree. The natural pigments bring out a richness in colour that contrasts the fragile translucence of each display. The threadwork is fine enough to pass through a needle, the zari flame-like in the gaze of light.

Each saree in the exhibition finds a distinct personality.

While purples exude regality and greens sit firm in groundedness, each piece is also a subvertion in itself. Often, an intense hue is accompanied by a delicate motif or  paar, while pastels and softer colors venture into more daring craftsmanship. Interestingly enough, each saree seems to allude to some primal truths of human existence. There is a shyness in Laaj offset by the dewy eyes of Godhuli; there lies a tranquil ethereality in Joshna and a burst of youthful fervor in Fagun. Moving from soil to sky and fire to fury, each Jamdani reveals an invigorating picture, a body that invokes so many forgotten memories.

A Journey Through Colors and Motifs

The staging itself is beautiful. It takes us to a terrain that isn’t shy of rain, lest the sarees feel homesick or lost. The draping of each saree takes on a different physicality. Sometimes it is a woman in the midst of an afternoon read, and at the turn of a head the saree becomes a river.

The most striking though, is the Devi draped in Sabeki, a commentary not only on the otherworldly quality of the silver-white saree, but the ability of the Jamdani to rise to the fore of divinity. For the weavers at Narayanganj, the taant is a way of life that must be attended to with a sense of pious religiosity. The loom enshrouds the very life of the village, reaching into sleep and love and childsplay. The riverine soil is reflected in the paar, embellished with fish and flowers from everyday life; the body of the river in turn is set adrift in the jamin which translates a cultural ethos into thread. The Jamdani has, perhaps, been the truest keeper of the Sonar Gaaon’s secrets.

Cultural Reflections and Artistic Revelations:

The exhibition also allowed a look into the many motifs and paar-s the Jamdani has been crafted into through the years. This was accompanied by photographs of the creative process. The gentle waft of moist earth against floral dye seemed almost palpable, as the exhibition moved from one realm to the next.

Love and light arose within the Jamdani, in the arms of Sohaag and Mukto Daana. The Parijaat, in turn, interpreted the mythic tree into floral embroidery in the lap of gold. Sarath, within all this glimmer, reminded us that blue skies will always follow pallor and smoke. The gallery had shaped into a universe of human experiences; contemplating, challenging, resolving the questions that appear in the throes of mundanity.

In the final room that lay awaiting our gaze, the Jamdani danced into a dreamlike scape. The sarees were hung as though they had just emerged from the taantghor, their heads held high against the dust of urban greys. They whispered silently of the borders they’d traversed, and sung the little buli-s that carry the craft beyond time.

The Jamdani saree finds its nomenclature from the Persian ‘Jam-Dar’ which alludes to a vessel that holds flowers. Persian warriors, in their adventure towards Bengal, brought along skilled artisans from their homelands. These techniques then collided with the local styles of Bengal; and this confluence shaped into the saree that has become so familiar.

Concluding Thoughts:

Jamdani: Threads of Elegance slowly transforms into a commentary upon the historic art forms of Bengal, rooted in the tales of its people and upheld by the nurture of her soul. It manages to surpass the binds of mere aesthetic, reinstating that the Jamdani isn’t just another beautiful weave, but a daughter of South Asian heritage.

In the yellows of the Chhobi-o-ghor Art Gallery, each saree became a storyteller, a voice that articulates an entire lifetime. And we, the viewers, the lovers of art, were able to find our own selves in these tales. We became one with the community of Jamdani, keepers of little histories and dreamers of sheer possibility.
