Concept Note

We are pleased to present memoir, an exhibition that showcases the vibrant journey of Arindam Dutta, an artist whose beginnings in North Kolkata have evolved into a captivating portrayal of life's simple yet profound moments. Set within the Chhobi-o-Ghor Art Gallery, this exhibition promises a heartwarming exploration through Arindam Dutta's artistic expressions. The exhibition features a collection of works that revive the cherished memories of artist’s childhood and the vibrant community that influenced his formative years. From the playful escapades of sailing paper boats during the monsoon floods to the animated scenes of local hawkers, the bird sellers, and the lively streets of North Kolkata, each painting is a vibrant reflection of the past, filled with warmth, nostalgia, and the unmistakable joy of existence. Arindam’s skillful use of tempera and his unique approach to dust colors create a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow, texture, and form, turning everyday scenes into extraordinary visions of beauty and emotion. His "Childhood" series, in particular, is a heartfelt tribute to the innocence and wonder of youth, capturing the universal essence of exploration and imagination. Arindam Dutta: A Journey Through Visual Narratives

Arindam Dutta, b. 1966, is a recognized Indian artist whose contributions have enriched the field of visual arts in India. Over the decades, Dutta has developed a unique voice through his exploration of themes such as memory, identity, and the intricacies of daily life. His academic background is impressive, with a Master of Visual Arts degree obtained with first-class first from Rabindra Bharati University in 1993, following a Bachelor of Visual Arts degree from the same institution.

Since 1993, Dutta has been shaping the next generation of artists as an art teacher at the Birla Institute for Visual & Performing Arts (Swar Sangam). His creative output is diverse, ranging from designing album covers for Rabindra Sangeet to creating illustrations for a BBC World documentary on Lord Clive. Dutta's commitment to public art is evident in his mural projects, including collaborative works in Kolkata and a significant mural at Fort William Nature Park with Mrs. Shanu Lahiri in the year 1994. Dutta's excellence in art has been acknowledged through various awards, including a Gold Medal in M.V.A. (Painting) in 1993, the Nirod Baran Memorial prize in 1994, and accolades from prestigious art competitions and exhibitions including CAMLIN’ all India art teachers art exhibition in 2004. His artistic journey has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, both solo and group shows notably “Eastern Region Art Exhibition” organized by Rashtriya Lalit Kala Kendra, ‘Art Anonymous’ organized by Oxford Book Store Gallery, Calcutta 1996 highlighting his significant contributions to Indian art. A notable point in his career was his solo exhibition at Taj Bengal Kolkata in 2016. In addition to his personal artistic endeavors, Dutta has actively participated in the art community as a mentor, leading workshops like KALA KUMBHA at KIIT organized by NGMA 2021. and fostering the growth of emerging artists. His works are held in high regard, featured in collections both in India and internationally. Arindam Dutta's ongoing commitment to exploring the depths of human emotion and experience through his art continues to captivate and inspire audiences, making him a significant figure in contemporary Indian art.
