Understanding Autism: A World Beyond Words
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interactions of an individual. It manifests in unique ways for each individual, often leading to sharp sensitivities, deep-seated passions, and an extraordinary perception of the world. While the exact cause remains elusive, researchers suggest a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Yet, in the midst of these challenges, many individuals with autism display remarkable talents, their minds operating like an uncharted universe of colors, shapes, and sounds.
One such story is that of Soham Das—a 12-year-old prodigy who found his voice through his paintings.

‘Pagoler Maa’ to the mother of a Genius
Born in Kolkata, Soham’s childhood was anything but ordinary. His mother, initially branded as ‘Pagoler Maa’ (a mad child’s mother) by neighbours and relatives, struggled to comprehend her son’s silence and unusual behaviors. He avoided social interactions, preferred solitude, and communicated in ways that defied conventional norms. While others saw an anomaly, a renowned psychiatrist saw potential. With the proper guidance, Soham’s world unfolded—not through words, but through the strokes of his brush.
His mother, a former software engineer at Sony, made an unthinkable decision—she quit her high-paying job to dedicate herself entirely to Soham’s journey. His father, a Kolkata police officer posted at Lalbazar, stood as a silent pillar of strength, ensuring his son had everything he needed. Home-schooling became the norm, tailored to nurture Soham’s extraordinary artistic abilities.

The Waiting Zone and the Complete Zone
Soham’s world is structured with precision. In his home, two distinct spaces define his creative process. The ‘Waiting Zone’ is where incomplete works rest—canvases whispering stories in progress. The ‘Complete Zone’ is reserved for finished masterpieces, which Soham himself shifts once he deems them ready. This self-imposed discipline speaks volumes of his creative philosophy, one that follows its own rhythm and rules.
A Demand Worth 2,000 Rupees
Art, for Soham, is not a pastime—it is his essence. His mother recalls an incident that underscored his uncompromising approach to his craft. One day, he asked for a painting brush worth ₹2,000. Thinking it was an impulsive demand, his mother bought a cheaper brush of ₹500 as an alternative. But Soham refused to touch it. From that moment on, his mother vowed never to undermine his artistic instincts, ensuring that he always had the best materials to bring his visions to life. She realized that art was not just a hobby for her son—it was his language, his way of communicating with the world.
The Colors of His Soul: Soham’s Artistry
Soham’s paintings are an explosion of color, form, and emotion. Each brushstroke carries an intensity that transcends conventional artistic expressions. His works are characterized by vivid hues, abstract formations, and a depth of storytelling that belies his young age. His subjects range from landscapes drenched in surrealism to emotive portraits that seem to look deep into the viewer’s soul. Critics and art enthusiasts alike have described his pieces as “windows into an alternate reality” where emotions are painted rather than spoken.
His creative process is deeply personal. He immerses himself entirely into his work, often spending hours on a single piece, tweaking every shade and contour until he achieves the perfection he envisions. Art supplies are his prized possessions, and his studio space is meticulously organized to cater to his artistic flow.
The Sayings of Soham’s Paintings
Soham’s art is not merely a visual experience; it is an echo of his emotions, an intricate dialogue between colors and silence. His paintings convey what words often fail to capture—his innermost thoughts, joys, and struggles. His mother recalls moments when Soham would finish a painting and point at it with a sense of finality, as if declaring, “This is what I mean to say.” Each of his artworks seems to carry an unsaid message, be it the chaos of emotions, the serenity of solitude, or the complexity of an unspoken narrative.
One of his paintings, a vibrant interplay of blues and yellows, was interpreted by an art critic as a depiction of duality—joy and melancholy coexisting in harmony.
Another piece, a flurry of crimson and deep black, was described as “a silent scream on canvas.” But Soham never explains. His silence is the final stroke in his masterpieces, leaving the audience to find their own meanings within his world.
