Bidhan Biswas is an artist and researcher dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Alpona, a traditional art form from Bengal. Born and raised in the heart of Bengal, his fascination with the unique forms and colors of Alpona began early in his life. In 1985, he completed his Diploma in Visual Arts from Rabindra Bharati University. Following his formal education, he sought the mentorship of the renowned folk artist, Kalidas Gupta, and dove into the exploration of Bengali folk music for about six years. Bidhan's journey took him to remote corners of Bengal, tracing the indigenous festival customs where Alpona is still a celebrated art form. His work is an honest, heartfelt reflection of the courtyards of rural Bengal, encapsulating the traditional Alpona decorations in his distinct artistic style. His dedication goes beyond his artistry. As a writer, he has contributed to various books on folk arts and crafts, shedding light on the depth and richness of these traditional art forms. For almost three decades, since 1995, Bidhan has been engaged as an Alpana artist and researcher, conducting numerous workshops and seminars to impart his knowledge to a wider audience. His lifelong endeavor is a unique attempt to keep the endangered art of Alpana alive in Bengal, reminding us of the beauty and cultural significance of this fading art form.
