Born on 11 January 1933 in a richly cultured family from Kolkata, Uma Siddhanta was destined to be a great sculptor. Nurtured and mentored by Phani Bhusan Das - protégé of the acclaimed artiste Nandalal Bose - she developed an avid interest for visual arts including batik, leather craft and pottery as well as embroidery & woodcraft! Despite her expertise in these fields however , it's artful sculptures that won out at last; leading this talented creator all the way up to becoming one of Kolkata’s most successful artists today.
